okayy so I really feel like someone needs to address the subject of breastfeeding and mommas thinking they have a low supply.

**a couple GREAT links to check out are these ones:

-but anyway, I see lots of new mothers spirited their baby isn't getting enough to eat at the breast because they can only pump 1oz (this is just an example) so they think baby is only eating an ounce at each feeding. this isn't true, a pump does not simulate milk like a nursing baby. you may only pump 1oz but your LO actually eats 5oz at the breast. (again just an example). the ONLY way to know how much a baby gets each feeding is to weigh them right before and immediately after eating, most lactation consultants will do this for you.

-next subject, supplementing with formula. this is NOT a bad thing, but it's usually an unnecessary measure. some mom's are worried their baby isn't getting enough at the breast so they want to top off feedings with a bottle, or give LO a bottle at night. but if you really want to successfully breast feed, bottle feeding (formula or pumped milk) could be detrimental. if you give your baby a bottle that's "extra" milk your LO needs but your body isn't being told to make it so your body thinks it's making plenty of milk when is not. if you give your LO a bottle you NEED to pump to keep up your supply.

-and the last thing, mom's thinking they don't make enough milk so they pump like crazy, chug mothers milk tea and eat lactation cookies like it's their job. these are great ways to build your supply when needed but be careful you don't create an oversupply. an oversupply of milk has a whole host of problems. some just effect your baby's eating, others can be serious medical issues. so be careful. an oversupply of milk is not necessary.

your body and your baby know what they are doing! Trust them! if baby wants to nurse constantly DO IT. they're telling your body to make more milk for them because in a few days they'll NEED more milk.

-so long as your baby is peeing and pooping regularly, and gaining weight, you DO make enough milk. and if you think you don't talk to a lactation consultant. only they can tell you if you have a low supply or not.
