mamas I have a question related to breastfeeding.. when I was up at 3:30 this morning to feed my daughter, my breasts were quite full (had been about 5 1/2 hours maybe 6) and she eats every 4 during the day....I noticed after feeding her, on both sides, that my left breast was still a bit sore in one spot and there was a slightly hard spot right there.... I pumped for about 12 minutes and it made the hard spot go away but it was still sore.... when my daughter woke back up she fed on that side for 15 minutes and I didn't really notice anything..... now when I just fed her an hour ago, she got full off the opposite side (it was really full lol) and refused the left, so I pumped again.... I got 2 ounces out of it (which is about normal for me, I'm making lactation cookies today to try and build my stash up a bit more) but my left breast is still a bit tender to the touch, I don't feel a hard spot, it's not hot, and I don't see any red around the tender spot..... any idea what it could be? I pumped for my first child and never experienced this.... I am asking on here first before I call the Dr and it be nothing..... thanks mamas ☺

clogged ducts. warm compress when she is done eating.. warm shower and hand express. some boobs don't respond to the pump like others. sounds like you're near an oversupply even with a regulated schedule with DD. @sarahdrew

Oh I thought I wasn't producing enough lol I thought 2 ounces pumped at 4 months wasn't a lot.... thank you @gypsy.soul2 .... I was worried that it was mastitis and I was going to make her sick having her feed on that side.... I will definitely use warm compresses and let the water fall on my front side in the shower a bit more....

it could be you had a clogged milk duct that you unclogged and emptied. when I had a sore, hard area like that it came and ago for a few days then got real bad, and I noticed a white "blister" on my nipple. I found out I had a milk bleb. which means one of the pores where milk comes out had skin grow over it. it basically just needed "popped" for that whole duct to empty (I expressed 4oz out of that one clogged duct) so basically just keep an eye on it, I'd it keeps coming back it may be a milk bleb, if it doesn't happen again for awhile then it's just a clogged duct and pretty easy to correct. :)

also, how much milk you can pump is not an indication of how much milk you actually produce and the baby eats. a pump doesn't stimulate milk let down like a baby does so you can pump 2oz, when you actually produce 6oz, and if you try to increase your supply you'll have an oversupply which causes a whole host of problems.

thank you both so much @crunchymomma @gypsy.soul2 I was so worried it would be something serious and would need meds, I always jump to the worst case scenario in my head..... @crunchymomma I will definitely keep an eye on it, if it keeps it up too long I will call my lactation consultant

Oh I never thought of that, I had been told the pump doesn't empty beasts like a baby... I do have quite a bit in my freezer right now lol I'm running put of room

@crunchymomma, if I can't get my daughter to nurse on that side will pumping help get it unclogged? I'm also going to be getting in the shower soon and will massage it while in there

Yes pumping can help it. it's not effective as nursing, and may take a little more but it'll help.
but if you suspect a clogged duct always start your baby out nursing on that side.

if you have a manual pump, you might want to try pumping while in a hot shower.

I used to have a manual pump, I will have to look for it just in case... I finally got her to nurse on that side first for about 11 minutes ☺ I was so happy I almost cried lol
