Only father and son with the exact same legal name can be considered Sr., Jr., by the government but that doesn't mean you can't nickname him Jr.

I'm not sure if they have to have the entire name the same or just first and last. My husband is the 3rd, his dad is Jr, and his grandpa was Sr but they all have different middle names.

I thought it just had to be first and last, but we shall figure it out @misserinc

My husband and I had this same argument-- he found this on Wikipedia: The term "junior" is correctly used only if a child's first, middle, and last names are identical to his or her parent's names. When the suffixes are spelled out in full, they are always written with the first letter in lower case.
