Can someone out there please help me? My baby is 6 days old and she was exactly a month early. I decided to breastfeed, but I am now thinking that may not have been the best decision. She is too small to latch so I have been pumping, it started off with me feeding her every 3 hours and now it seems like she is hungry every like hour and a half. I can't sleep because I am constantly just having to pump, change her, feed her, then put her to sleep. I know that breast feeding is what is best for a baby, especially when they are early but I just don't think I can do it. I feel like I am letting her down, and my husband too because he is big on breastfeeding. I just honestly don't know what to do. Please help me, and please no rude comments.

It isn't only her eating, she is too small to latch to I am pumping and it is tearing me up. My nipples are already like completely scabbed over and I cry every time I do it. I just don't know if I can keep on.

@ktwins188, thank you, but I just feel like such a failure if I do this. I think it is what will be best but I know everyone in my family, including my husband expects me to breastfeed. 😕

set her a schedule stick to it and know that your providing her with what she needs that's the info I've gathered from the research I did about it. Also another tid bit I learned from the research I did was that for the first month or 2 you have to breast feed every 2 hours then you can start adding time like 3 hours but keep your schedule even if your baby is crying try and console them until it's time so they can get used to it.

@mommy2b2016, I started with 3 hours just because that is what they were having me do in the hospital, but the problem is she just never seems satisfied. And it kills me.

yeah but your not a failure it's alright to go to formula that's what it's there for plus my husband thought the same but if you have to stop it's fine I felt bad too for a little while but I realized I have a happy healthy fed baby

If you breastfeed, you're never ever supposed to have a schedule.

Now if you're exclusively pumping, then there are certain times you need to pump because your prolactin levels are higher but if you're latching her you feed on demand. But it's okay to formula feed! I was formula fed and I came out fine! You're not a failure, mama.

@mamajustice, yes I do, and I am just so worried that everyone will hate me if I stop but I feel like we would both be so much happier.

Before giving up completely, I would check out a group called "Expressions! Lactation Services" on Facebook. They're real life lactation consultants as well as breastfeeding mommies who have a lot of the same problems. If you have to switch to formula, that's 100% okay. Every mommy is different. You know your baby better than anyone else and if you think that she's still hungry or not satisfied, go with your instinct. :) Best of luck honey!

My 29 weeker was able to latch on at 32 weeks, what do you mean by she's too small? Gave you tried nipple shields? And if you're in pain it's very possible she's not latching on correctly. Can you contact the hospital you delivered at and talk to the lactation consultant?

I had my daughter a month early . she is three weeks now . Have you tried a nipple shield . I have to use one for mine because her mouth is not strong enough to stay on my nipple . I also had to pump after I breastfeed her but now since she gaining weight and latching good with the nipple shield i can stop and only pump the times she will use a bottle . I know it's hard at first she was not gaining any weight because we were not good at breast feeding. it took practice and patience . I felt the same way feed pump change diaper give her the bottle that I pumped . it's exhausting but don't give up . your milk is perfect. for your premie. My girl does the every hour to hour and a half thing too . I think it's called cluster feeding. But that does not mean they are not feeding well . Talking to a lactation specialists would be helpful. it also took as longer than a week to be okay at breastfeeding . At first I had to give her more than half of what she needing through a bottle . now I only give her one for her vitamin and of dad is staying up and giving me a break . Don't give up just yet .

Breastfeeding is hard to start getting things going. I didn't know what I was doing, how to latch him good or that you needed to switch sides.. nothing. I have learned that it takes lots of dedication. I almost gave up because I was so exhausted and just stressed. after the first few months it got so much easier! I was breastfeeding like a pro. Now my lo is almost 10 months and still just breastfeeding. Don't worry about things as much and try to sleep as much as possible, in between the lo´s naps. I would pump a bottle before bed and let my husband feed my lo so I could rest a little also. Don't give up.

Hang in there!! Once it starts flowing your baby will latch on. she just isn't getting enough of the flow like she does the bottle. My son was the same way, he was 3 weeks early and had to feed him every two hours. But don't give up breastfeeding, it's the best bond with you baby. It'll take awhile, but like I said, it'll get better!

And remember, babies who are breastfed you more time a day, simply because it passes through their body much quicker, but it is so oooo so oooo good for them. Over feeding her breast milk is never a worry.
