They can contain a food poisoning called listeriosis which pregnant women are more vulnerable to and that can effect a baby badly. The scary part is it doesn't usually show symptoms for a long time so it could be hurting the baby and you wouldn't even know till its born. I did eat sandwich meat every once and while when I was really craving jimmy johns but I tried to avoid it as much as possible. But like I said lots of people eat it and there fine.
They don't want you to eat it because of a bacteria called listeria. Alot of doctors say that as long as you heat it (to kill the bacteria) then you're good.
I was also concerned about this but I've eaten an Italian cold cut almost every day of my pregnancy and the doctor said that I'm fine and it was fine to eat. Just always check dates on lunch meat. And if it looks or smells different stay away.

Some doctors say not to eat it. Some say it's fine. My doctor said it was fine so I had it, but not all the time.
