i wouldnt recommend putting poison in your kitchen lol, but i would get some sticky pads, or some poison and put it in corners and against the walls of your house! Rats love to run against walls. We had a mice problem a few years back and thats how we did it!
Rodents live in your kitchen where they're most likely to find food. As long as you clean it out and make sure the poisen is behind appliances where humans won't accidently be exposed (Idk about you but I don't eat off the floor behind my fridge) you'll be just fine. You can find it at Wal-Mart or home depot in the cleaning section usually. The rats gonna die obviously and you'll wanna pull out all the appliances anyways and clean behind them really good after so there's no food remants to attract any more little buddies. My husband's best friend works for a pest company.
(Putting rat poison in random corners around your house is a recipe for disaster if there's ever kids or pets around. You want to make sure it's somewhere unreachable. 2 year olds and dogs tend to have trouble moving fridges and dish washers. lol) Ive found the sticky pads don't do anything if you're dealing with large rodents. Works great for little tiny mice though!)
I agree the poison behind appliances where the kids & animals can't get or set Lil mouse traps...like the ones yu see on TV lol...wit the cheese & the snapper thing lol...
I always had a cat so rats would stay away or get killed sadly. but unless you want to call an exterminator you can set traps. the ones in cartoons that kill or even find a trap that catches and not kill to set it free.

if you have pets the make poison that's not deadly to cats or dogs. check any type of farm supply store and they will help you.
