Question to moms with babies that excessively spit up: my son is a little over a month old, he is breastfed, and gets formula when I don't produce enough. He spits up a lot, on a regular basis after every feeding. He gets no more then 2 oz per feeding (I pump so that's how I know how much breast milk he's getting.) He was put on rice cereal because he had lost about a half a pound, he gained that weight back but in turn became very constipated and had to get a suppository. His dr suggested diluting 2 oz of prune juice and giving it to him daily, that has not helped. I talked with a friend who gave her son oatmeal cereal for the same reasons (spitting up) to see if maybe that would keep him regular, we've had no luck yet (he had to get another suppository last night because he got constipated again.) I stopped giving him the oatmeal cereal starting last night to see if maybe he would have a regular bowel movement, no luck yet and he's spitting up at every feeding. The oatmeal and rice cereal definitely helps him with spitting up but it just makes him constipated. He's had an ultrasound and x-Ray to rule out pyloric stenosis when he was 2 weeks old. It was negative or maybe inconclusive because he was so gassy. His pediatrician has ordered another ultrasound for him. I'm just trying to see if anyone else has gone through this, and if so what helped their little one.

my daughter is what they call a happy spitter because she always spits up she still does and she's almost 8 months but my doctor always told me if a mouthful or less shes fine

have you seen if maybe he is tongue tied or lip tied? my son was and he would be this same way. he was also colicky and had acid reflux. he was put on meds for it and we got a Dex daydreamer bed that helped with that as well. also try the bicycle exercises and rub his belly to help with the gas. also try putting a warm cloth on his belly to help with that as well.

@mrs.cravens, I think he spits up more than a mouthful, he'll do it about 3-4 times after a feeding, no matter how long I hold him upright for unfortunately. @a12j14carl we've done the bicycles some, I'll have to do it more regularly with him, I talked with my dr about medicine, he said that it just helps with pain from the acid reflux, he was diagnosed with gerd but he never seems in pain. He occasionally chokes on his spit up with scares the heck out of me.

@a12j14carl, we've also elevated his crib mattress with blankets under the mattress, and he will occasionally sleep in his swing

I would request for a 2nd opinion. the medication helped with my son a lot. I also got mint candies and soaked them in warm water and let my son drink the water which helped also. the mint candies that are red and white. not the hard ones but the ones that dissolve quick. I forgot the name but i gave him an oz or 2 3 times a day and it helped him

I did and my son had reflux and we put him on zantac and also switched him to Soy formula.

my son slept in a swing for the longest time till we could afford the dex daydreamer bed. the bed really does wonders I loved it and worth every penny

I've been thinking about going to a different pediatrician, just for a second opinion. I feel like we've been going back and forth with trying to regulate his weight and keep him from spitting up since after his 2 week appt

I might have to try it then, I'm worried he's going to spit up in the middle of the night and choke on it
