it tests for a bacteria some women carry in the vagina, if you test positive you have to have antibiotics in an IV during vaginal child birth so it doesn't pass to the baby.

I had that done today as a matter of fact! all they do is swipe the very outside of your vagina and buttocks. no pain whatsoever. but yes, otherwise, @their.bomb.ass.mom is right.
