I got both, I got pain meds first before my labor progressed for contractions and then got the epidural like 30 mins before I was 5cm dilated.

With my pregnacies I got pain meds to help me sleep and rest before the pain. I also found it helped me concentrate better.. No epidural for me!

I was offered an alternative it's called an intrathecal its like the epidural but isn't as intense and wears off after 2 hrs. Worked well for me cause was able to relax to get to pushing time and was able to feel and push all on my own. The contractions are the worst part in my opinion. But I had my second natural and yes it hurt but the recovery was so much easier not having to empty my body if the pain meds. I'm excited to do natural again even if been 8 years I think I can manage lol

Epidural, i got one at 6cm and it didnt work so they gave me one again at 9cm. Im so glad i did it because they ended up having to cut me, and use the forceps to pull him out, because he was a little big for my birth canal
