Hi! I'm new to this, if I "follow" someone, is that like a friend request? I'm looking for likeminded moms to be friends with. I have 4 (soon to be 5) children,  homeschool, and raise some livestock.

Following somebody yes is kind of like a friend request, but they don't accept it, you just automatically start following them :)
