Could be a weak cervix, couldn't hold the baby, placenta detachment, cervix softens and dialates early, water breaks for unknown reason. It's mainly to do with the cervix, and when it starts to weaken.
With my first pregnancy I dilated 3cm at 19wks. I got an emergency surgery to stitch my cervix to try to hold the baby in, but I ended up developing an infection that made me have to deliver at 22wks. I have an Incompetent cervix which commonly causes preterm labor because you usually don't know you have it until it's too late.
thank you. thankfully this pregnancy I got my stitch early at 14wks and now I'm 23wks and I'll be 24wks weds. as far as your friend goes, I know how she is probably feeling so make sure to be there for her. losing a baby that late is a different type of pain and it normally comes as a shock and surprise.
@danimom2be, I know this might sound like a dumb question but I'm only asking because I'm almost 22 weeks; did your baby survive? I'm sorry, you don't have to answer...I'm just curious for my own nervousness. I have always been so afraid I'll go into premature labor.

that's not a dumb question at all! No he didn't. Before I delivered him, they had me sign a bunch of papers saying that he was too little to be incubated and didn't have the lung capacity to survive and that he would be born a live, but would shortly after die. It was really hard... he was 1.1lbs and 11in... kept trying to breath, but he couldn't. Now in other cases, had we been 23wks at the time, they could have given me steroids to strengthen his lungs so he could be incubated. Unfortunately with the infection in my blood stream, time just wasn't on our side. @ashley525

A friend went into premature labor and lost her baby, she was 19 weeks. I have never heard of that.

and don't be afraid. just be conscious of your body. if you know something is wrong, don't let no doctor tell you otherwise. @ashley525
