I bought diapers and wipes every pay check until she was born. Between that and the baby shower, she's seven months old and I still haven't bought diapers or wipes! I definitely recommend buying them like that because you'll have enough going on without running to Target for diapers. lol
We did a diaper raffle for a Walmart gift card. Its totally worth it. I'd buy white or black socks. Because I have all these cutesy colored patterned socks and can never find a mate. haha

anytime, I started buying basic stuff at 14 weeks then found out gender Thursday so now I am buying the other stuff.

I'd say it's never to early to start! but don't buy too much basic stuff because that's what everyone loves to give at baby showers (:
