if you have cramping that is going across your whole stomach that's a contraction. if you time them and they start making a pattern (20 mins apart. 5 min apart, etc) that's a sign. if you walk around and rest and stuff and they go away they are braxton hicks (fake contractions that are just your body practicing) if they don't go away that's real labor. labor at home as long as you can, but once they get to 5 mins apart that's when you should head to the hospital
