I know this isn't closely pregnancy related. But I've also seen countless new moms wanting to get the newborn baby or toddler a puppy "to grow up with." BAD IDEA! If morning sickness and hormones throw you off your square to the point you can't behave like a human, please imagine what a toddler (and their daily antics) or a newborn (and their total dependence on mama) will do, then multiply it by 10 because the puppy WILL mess up/nip/occasionally chew destroy things. Same with cats. Animals aren't born trained, and they're a lifetime commitment too.

I worked in an animal shelter for 2 years and pregnant woman always wanted a puppy. We were able to talk some out of a puppy until the baby is born, or they adopted a trained dog we had in foster that we knew would be totally fine. The ones we did end up adopting puppies to, or those who went and bought one from a breeder, 95% of the time they were in our shelter within a month or two or them having their baby. I understand the thought process behind it all, and it can be a great thing, but it's definitely something to wait on. It's so good to see someone else trying to educate about it too. :)

@tinyturtle2016, I've been in rescue and foster for 3 years now. Probably 3 of 5 puppies who come thru the rescues (I work with 3) are a result of a pregnant woman or new mom wanting a cute dog for baby to grow up with. The thing they don't get is, that pup will need time and attention to adjust to a new home. Small children should be taught to handle animals. I'm at 31 weeks myself and YES its tedious to walk my puppy. It's annoying when she chews. But she's here to stay. (I got her the same week I found out I was pregnant, imagine that!) Trainers are expensive, and pups and kitties need medical care just like people do! People just get blinded by cute.

I rescued our dog Macy, she's trained thank god, and now she's our sweet spoiled girl, we also made sure she was great with kids before we took her in.

@williams15, our little stinker Jas was an orphaned puppy. I helped bottle feed her, and when she hit 8 weeks I was too attached lol So now here she is! She has been house trained for 3 months now and is taking obedience classes (3rd set!); we got her spayed and believe she's gonna be a great fur sister. She loves kids and babies. She even kisses the TV when she sees a baby.

Exactly, @tayek . And usually they're brought back with worse behavior than typical puppy behavior. When a new mom has no time at all to train them, the only attention they're really getting is negative responses to bad behavior, which means they'll act out more just to get a response. It's so much harder to adopt them out that way. People barely want to deal with normal puppy play as it is. Then add in the fact that the puppy now thinks that chewing and biting and making messes is the right way to get attention. It makes them a bit harder to train when people hardly want to hire a trainer anyway. Pets are expensive and time consuming. It's well worth it if you have the time and finances, but most people don't think it through and aren't willing to wait. I fostered a dog we adopted out to a pregnant woman. I didn't want to adopt her to this lady for a large variety of reasons, but one of the other girls did it. This 4 year old dog was well trained, house broken, great with other animals and kids of all ages. She was brought back 3 months after the baby was born and was somehow dog selective, peed and pooped all over the house, barked constantly, bad on a leash, covered in fleas, and lost even her basic training. Oh. And she flinched whenever someone tried to pet her. Not that that always happens but the majority of the time a new mother gets so overwhelmed and frustrated after already having to care for a newborn and spend money on stuff for the baby, that even an amazing, perfect adult dog can end up relearning everything and doing it backward. Not sure why she started flinching but I grabbed her that day and took her home. It took six months of working with her, between my ex and I, and getting her to play nice with our big male dog to get her even close to how good she was before. And still for some reason had an aversion to certain dogs. Out of complete fear, she'd attack them if they got too close. We were able to get her to the point where we could redirect her around other dogs easily. It's just so hard to retrain dogs who have gone through this. :(

@tinyturtle2016, we had one like that. Lost training and new aversions. Turns out she was being spanked with a hairbrush because the toddler would throw food off the high chair. Naturally the dog would eat it. The patents resorted to spanking pup a lot. It took us almost a year to get the doggie (a gorgeous pit/lab) to her original level. She formed an attachment to my brother and his wife, and they have her now. Lisbet (doggie) is still skittish when she sees the brush, 😔 But my bro and sis in law work with her a lot. She gets treats and extra love when they brush her, and she's gotten to a point she doesn't cower when she sees the brush.

@theinkedbarbie, she's adorable! Lovelovelove the ears! And @tayek, These owners were probably doing the same. It's so sad. I couldn't imagine treating my pets poorly or getting rid of them over something they naturally do. This is the baby girl we fostered. She was adopted by my cousin. Little pocket pit. Came back at 45 pounds and she was considered overweight! Lol.

@theinkedbarbie, goodness they're gorgeous! I have a little chi mix and my ex has our Dogo Argentino. I'll probably never have another chihuahua after this one, her attitude is just... too much. Lol. But I'm a sucker for big dogs and bully breeds. <3 That's my chi hanging with us in the yard.
