I think the punishment should fit the crime. She shouldn't have been smoking meth while she was pregnant. I have zero sympathy for addicts who are pregnant and dont seek help. Sorry.

she deserves to be in jail!!! That baby didn't asked to be brought in to the world. I feel bad for the baby meth babies have a lot of problems

they are saying any drug that can cause addiction I think other states need to adopt the law it's not fair to those poor children to come into the world feigning for something they knew nothing about

Omgahhhhh see this is a new law but hopefully it makes its way across the country but there should also be some sort of thought put in to who gets custody bc if your going to take the child from a drug addict place it back into the hands of another drug addict then nothing was accomplished! @lp1988727

Speaking from experience, because I am an addict, I think this should be the law everywhere! I've been sober for almost 2 years now. But while I was using I was hoping to get pregnant cause I knew that'd be the one thing to stop me and to go get help. But fortunately almost 2 years ago I was so tired of living that life! I hated it! But I had to have it to function I couldn't get out of bed without my fix and it's sad. It really is! Although I am an addict I also believe that a fetus is innocent and if your going around having sex and become pregnant than you need to take responsibility! I don't see how a pregnant woman can continue to use knowing that baby is gonna suffer! Although I can say that being addicted to drugs can cause you to do things you'd never think you'd do. But if we had laws like this than I think it'll help pregnant moms to want to get help! But TN is also screwed up cause they wanna charge the moms for that but they also want to charge the moms that are trying to get help. I heard this one mom got charged when her baby was born cause it was born while on suboxone. Which I think is completely wrong!! That mom was getting help and was doing what she thought was best! I've rather a baby be born on suboxone than a baby be born on drugs! They monitor you and baby very close when on suboxone and they also know how to treat baby when born if it does have any type of WD from it. Idk that just my opinion and I'm sure some people aren't gonna agree with me...but to each there own.

watching a baby having withdrawals has to be absolutely the sadest thing they have seizures, eyes roll in back of there head, breathing issues its sad and I smoked weed and cigs and the day I found out I was pregnant I quit cold turkey my fiance asked how I did it I said you just do, I'm not gonna put my baby at risk for my own selfish desires no way and if you cant do that for your baby you don't deserve one cause being a mother is about selflessness and sacrifice period. for the rest of your life

Thank you!!! I don't like talking about it cause I feel like I'll be judged but sometimes I feel I need to share my story cause some people don't understand how it is. I never wanted to be an addict ever but it happens to the best of us! Anyways and yes she was convicted even after getting help! They took her baby away and charged her with child neglect. It's def some bs! And that's in TN. I hear of it happening all the time in TN!! I also hear that it's very very hard to get help down there too! It's hard for people to get into clinics and rehabs! It's sad really! Like they wanna throw these addicts in jail and treat them like crap when they don't even get the opportunity to get help!!

Suboxone is extremely abused, I know people that have been worse off on it than street drugs. In my eyes it is a drug. People start off using it to get off of other shit, and then continue using it year after year. And it's definitely NOT monitored well. I know a woman who was hooked on it, and when she got pregnant they told her she couldn't just quit because it could hurt the baby even worse t do that, but she needed to lower the dosage. Needless to say, somehow she actually managed to get her dosage higher. That is still putting an unborn child at risk, and being just as careless as if she were smoking dope. I feel like if you can put anything into your body that could harm your unborn child then you deserve to have consequences!

But this is in Alabama, not Tennessee and I have no idea how their system works.

THANK GOD. sorry if I offend anyone but that's what SHOULD OF HAPPENED. I have sstruggled with addiction and now after two years im COMOLETELY clean. no it wasn't easy. but if I was still doing drugs while pregnant my sober self would wish they would take her from me.. I live in TN and know too many junkies getting pregnant and having babies . I have no sympathy for this woman or any of the others who have had their children taken away because of their own selfishness and stupidity. BUT I do hope they are able to clean themselves up and be back in their child's life.

My cousin used while she was pregnant and poor little Emmy was born with holes in her esophagus, goin thru withdrawals, she doesn't have that instinct where most babies cry when they go to someone they don't know she will go to whoever and doesn't care so she goes to someone that's like a therapist and has way stiff muscles she is goin to physical therapy for and she's only 6 months. My cousin also abandoned her at the hospital and my aunt has now adopted Emmy (which she changed her name to) and my cousin and the dad signed over parental rights but did they get any charge? NO! It pisses me off so bad because the hospital told my aunt she was born addicted and that she had been abandoned but nothing got done about it! There needs to be punishment!

@thebroadwaybaby16, @brookiemarie my boyfriend's cousin came over and she was a little further along than I am and she and her boyfriend were so stoned out while they were over both of them slipped into the restroom to get high and they thought no one had seen them she hasn't had her baby yet but since we live in Tennessee I hope they do this to her as well

I don't have any issue with marijuana at all. I think it needs to be legalized... BUT I also think that while it's not legal why the hell would you risk losing your child for a quick high... people are fucking stupid

@babyjjsmommy, well I live in ky and yes suboxone CAN be abused! It's really only for people who are actually trying to get clean! And you can't just take the suboxone and think that you'll be okay, you also have to work the program. And around here there are a lot of OBS that are very well trained on sub babies. But I agree suboxone can be abused too. You have to want to get clean for it to actually work. And yes it's harmful to quit cold turkey while pregnant. Around here they switch you to subutex which only had the bupe in it and no nalaxone the nalaxone in the suboxone is what could harm the baby. Also there is a chance of baby having withdraw but they monitor it very close. I'm just saying I've rather be on subs and being monitored by my ob while on them than to be using street drugs.

Also though the baby might withdraw no matter on what dose your on its very unlikely they will while on subutex. But there is always a chance of it. That's why they recommend you to BF so baby gets some of the meds. But like I said I am an addict and it sucks and yes I feel guilty although I know I'm doing what's best for me and my baby. But like I said everyone is going to have different opinions....

Well it sounds like they monitor it a lot better where you are than here, it's very bad here and it's also alot of people's DOC. And yes, I can see that using it properly to get off a something else is a nice idea, but from what I understand drug addicts most often just substitute one thing for another. And that seems to be the case down here. People start it and never get off of it. @haybearsmomma

@babyjjsmommy, yes I highly agree with you. Suboxone has a bad stigma because of the people that don't truly wanna get help. They do substitute it and that's cause they either wanna sell them to get their fix or they wanna make sure they have something if they can't get their fix. It's sad really. I was very skeptical about getting on it because of that. And there's also Drs out there that prescribe it just for the $ and it's so sad honestly! I'm thankful that I found a dr that makes you work the program! You have to go to meeting and you have to do counseling! It's not just about the meds. Like I said I was skeptical about getting on it cause I didn't wanna trade one for another...but I tried everything to get clean before I tried suboxone. I tried rehab (6months) and ended up relapsing 3 months later, I tried quitting on my own, which never lasted more than a week. I tried meetings counseling and everything. And the withdraw was just so bad that I would end up going back and even when the withdraw was over with it takes a lot of time for your brain to heal. I had to learn how to live life again. Because I used for 4 years all I knew was how to live the life of an addict. Stealing, lying, running all hours of the day/night just to find a fix. It's sad but it took a long time for me to learn how to live life again. And now I am stable I have money, a house, I'm married. I never thought I'd be able to live this type of life again! Luckily I did it at a young age. I used from 18-23 and am now almost 25. Been clean for almost 2 years. But I strongly agree with you. I think that you should try rehab meetings and counseling before getting on it. Also, I don't plan on staying on it. A lot of Drs let people stay on them for a lifetime and that's stupid. I've been on it for 1.5 years and I would of already been off of it but since I ended up getting pregnant they won't taper you down while pregnant. But once I have him I'll keep tapering down every month until I eventually get off of it. And I can't wait to be able to not have to depend on anything at all. I really don't think I need it now but I take it cause I'm scared of what'll happen to the baby if I just stop and all that.....

@babyjjsmommy, but I also don't understand why it would be someone's doc cause I've never ever gotten high off of it. NEVER! But I also take my dose the way I'm suppose to too. I guess if you take a bunch at once it could cause u to get high. Idk? I've never tried it.

People shoot it up! Lol yeah I guess that along with taking more than you're prescribed will get you high? Idk. But I'm glad you're doing much better and lowering the dosage, I'm actually on a drugcourt program (long story short) I used to be a little party girl, and sold drugs here and there, and got pulled over with some things in the car. never been an addict so I cant say I understand it, but I've been on the program 2 1/2 years, and although it is an extremely corrupt and money hungry program that does take advantage of people, especially me considering I was hardly 18 and never had even been to that city before and also was forced to sign a confessional and never had a lawyer, so I had no choice but to join this program so that I wouldnt be a felon. But literally everyone on the program takes this medicine called neurotin, and it is something serious. Its totally a substitute drug, and it passes all the drug tests. Its so sad, because they'll probably all go back to doing stupid shit when they graduate, and most of them have kids/babies. I hate to see it.
