I don't think it stands for mens, I think it's the width. Go to Sperrys website, they give an explanation. I wear a 9 and my size 9 Sperry's fit perfectly.
It's a 5 medium which is average width. When it's in E it's a specific width either smaller or larger than M. But I wear Speery and I got a shoe true to size and can't wear them past about 20 weeks-they do run a bit on the narrow side so if your feet are swollen at all they most likely won't be comfy

Width is measured in "E"s. It's probably 5 in men's.

The M is standard like my Hubbs wears. 10.5m in men's I'm a 7m in women's m is just saying averake
