It's actually that you don't notice it as much during the day because you are doing things and distracted, also they are being rocked to sleep. At night they're awake because you're not moving around and of course you notice it more because you're not doing anything and you're still. Surprisingly enough they are asleep most of the time. My little bean drives me crazy at night.
