ladies, please help! I've vented this to my fav preggie, @camdensmama, and she agrees this is insane... but I may have no choice! I very recently started a new position, that was very hard to get. I work in research, and my salary depends on grant funding. The current grant I'm on initially ended nov. 30th and picked back up jan. 15th. I'm due dec. 8th, so the timing was perfect. Or it was perfect until I learned our grant was extended through January and will pick back up mid-March. The research is on a very rare sarcoma (cancer) that is very hard to get funding for- and it would be devastating to screw up this research. Long story short... my boss, who's the lead investigator, has asked if I could only take a week off when I have the baby and take a delayed maternity leave when the grant is over. Have any of you preggies returned to work so soon after giving birth?? Is it impossible?? I do have some flexibility in bringing her to work with me, but I'm freaked that I could wind up having a c-section and def not being ready to return in a week. I really can't afford to jeopardize my career, but this seems completely impossible! HELP!!

if you are able to bring your baby to work it could be possible but you also need to be careful if you have a c section to not over do it. hard call:/

C section or not your body needs to heal from giving birth. I think it is ridiculous to expect a new mother to return to work 1 week after giving birth! I wouldn't do it even if I could take my baby to work.

@tater4414, it really is, especially since I'm a FTM and have no clue what to expect. Luckily, I also have my mom who can watch her... but I'm also torn emotionally that I'll be away from her during such a critical bonding time. I'm so stressed from all of this.

@pregomego, that's exactly how I feel, but I'm receiving a lot of pressure at work and it's really weighing on me. I just feel like this is absurd to even consider.

Yea I don't think as a ftm myself I could have gone back in a week.. maybe 3 or 4 but Def not 1... that's a hard call idk hun :/

I argee @levleah. Not to make this into a gender equality thing but men never have to make this kind of decision between career and family.

@pregomego, oh girl, but it IS an issue of gender inequality in the workplace- you are dead on with that. I honestly need to have a difficult conversation with my boss tomorrow, because I feel like this is asking way too much of me. It's just sad that I could potentially jeopardize my dream career because I want to make the best decision for myself and my baby.

@mdomke22, I'm pretty sure I know the right decision. I'm just scared of what this will mean for my career. But I honestly don't think returning so soon is an option.

@levleah, remember mama. It may be your dream career. But no career will ever replace being a momma! I agree with everyone here. But like I told you earlier. Try to talk to her and see if she would be okay with getting you 2-3 weeks off instead of just 1. Your body needs proper time to heal! Or else it could I'm sure risk any future pregnancies if you don't heal properly. And then if they can do 2-3weeks. Just make sure they know your baby will be at work with you for the remainder of your "maternity leave" time. Which is an additional 3-4 weeks! That will still give you 6 weeks with her of every day bonding. Then let your mom help watch her!

@levleah, I had a c-section. My job was very low on people and asked if I could come back early if I wasnt over doing it. I went back to work I thin 2 weeks after I had him? If not sooner. I didn't work a lot. I didn't over due it. But it is possible and if you can bring your baby to work and don't feel like you are over doing it then I suggest it is fine. However I'm not an expert and I would talk to your doctor about it and see what he/she says.

@levleah, also. If you wanna get technical. I'm sure there are laws about maternity leave. So your job should be safe regardless! Ask your HumanResource department about it.
