I take care of developmentally disabled adults and am always so terrified when they become combative, I worked in Alzheimer's units for years and was never this scared of getting punched/kicked or bitten.
@cjolove93, I'm always afraid of getting punched in my stomach too at the nursing home I work with. That's why I always have another aide with me when I'm dealing with combative residents.
That is why I miss working in homes @fabmomof5 , I always had help if I even remotely needed it. Now, I work at an actual house with 4 mentally and semi-physically handicapped women. Its an easy and fun job, but when my girls get mad there's no getting away or getting help from a coworker. I only fear for my little one, if it were just me I would be fine.
I'm a nurses aide in the OR .. as much as I loved long term care & the elderly I couldn't handle combative patients and the demand for physical work.. I almost had a dimentia patient hit me and she grabbed me and I almost pulled her out of her wheelchair.. And the nursing home I was at wasn't so supportive with pregnancies either so that didn't help
