Why aren't you supposed to sleep on your back? I've heard that recently that you shouldn't when…

the blood vessels get blocked and you stop sharing oxygen and everything else to the baby . my back hurts when it's laid on even for a second .

I read that it has to do with an artery thats in your back and the weight of your uterus pushing down on it can decrease blood flow and oxygen to you and baby. But im not sure if thats true because I read it on the internet lol

Oh okay. My dr never told me it's unsafe to sleep anyway at all so I wasn't sure. I can feel her moving when I sleep on my back lol it's uncomfortable on the side now

my doctor told me I could lay on my back but not for long periods of time and thats its better to prop yourself up so youre not flat

my mom, she's a nurse and used to be a midwife, said there's a major vein that runs up your spine and laying flat when you're pregnant puts the extra weight from your uterus straight onto that vein so there is less blood flowing back up to your heart from your lower body. it can cause blood clots and changes in blood pressure because then your heart has to pump harder to put more force behind the blood already there to get it through a smaller space. and it's located on your right side which is why right side sleeping is discouraged

Idk how to sleep then! I sleep on my right side more than the left but neither are those are comfortable now but my back is which that wasn't before. I feel like I won't ever get sleep now

@gabisorexs, I sleep on my back and just make sure I have like 2 pillows under me so I'm somewhat propped up. I can only fall asleep on my back. But my body knows its limits. So if I have a hard time breathing my body rolls over! I've never had any issues tho. Also if I lay on my side and place a pillow behind my back and lean on the pillow it's really comfortable. It's like laying on my side but feels like I'm on my back!

@amber.s95, it is true. ive been knocked unconscious during an ultrasound bc he was directly on that vein. it's not fun and it does cause the babys heart beat to drop. it is dangerous for you and the baby

@chelsea0820, thats scary! I always end up in my baxk at night so I lay on my left side and put pillows behind me and in front of me so I cant roll over. My boyfriend used to roll me back in my side when I rolled over but he works graveyard now so I have to improvise lol

I was just told to sleep however is comfortable and that I'll know when I need to change spots. It's kind of hard to stop yourself from sleeping on your back or side because it's habit for me. I probably won't ever sleep if I just worry about what direction I'm laying in all the time
