you can pick anyone you think would step up and be a parental figure to your baby if anything were to happen. it doesn't have to be family.

Girl if you have someone you trust that much with your child if something happens to you. Who cares if their blood related. At this point the only people we trust is our parents.

And no. You don't have to be catholic. The godparents just help take part in the christening/baptism in a Catholic Church.
