Dads: 10 tips for right after your baby is born

The first few moments of being a dad can pass in a haze of excitement and exhaustion (yes, you're allowed to be exhausted, too!).

So here are 10 tips to help you make the most of the precious time just after your baby arrives in the world.

1. Give your partner a massive hug and a kiss.Whatever labour has been like for your partner, the moment of birth is special and often highly emotional. Tell her how fantastic she is.

2. Keep an eye on your baby. You're likely to be in a better position to see how your baby is just after he's born.

3. Cut your baby's cord (if you want to). Your midwife or Dr will show you where to cut, once they've clamped the cord.

4. Take photos or film. Give your partner a moment to prepare herself first, if she wants to. She may want you to wipe her face and brush her hair before you take a photo.

5. Cuddle your baby. Once your partner has had a cuddle, you're likely to be next.

6. Dress your baby. Your baby will need a diaper, and a T-shirt. Your Nurse or midwife can help you dress your baby if you need her to.

7. Help your partner. She may need your help to walk to the restroom. Or she may want you to get her PJ's or, clean pants. Make sure you know where to find these things.

8. Phone close relatives and friends.

9. Sort out your bags. After your baby's birth you may go home or move to the postnatal ward. This may mean swapping a labor bag for a bag you've already got sorted for the hospital stay.

10. Help your partner to settle in. Whether you're at home, in a birth centre or at hospital, make sure she is comfortable and has everything she needs, including:

▪a drink and

▪a snackher phone or MP3 playera

▪muslin square for your baby

▪toiletries, such as lip balm

▪plenty of pillows

If your baby was born by caesarean section, your partner may need to stay in hospital for a few days.
