This is a crazy question but I was wondering does the umbilical cord hold the baby together or something? I know it gets food thru the cord but why do drs put the clamp on it? what will happen if they left the clamp open ? would you see the inside of the baby or something? don't judge lol

I'm pretty sure the baby would bleed out without the wound being closed. The cord if I'm not mistaken is used to get food to the baby as well as blood

o OK.. well I know it heels pretty fast.. the clamp can fall off as early as 3 days. unless they put additional stuff on it to hold it together... but I knew it transfers food.. didn't know about the blood part @chhaya

because its connected to the placenta they have to cut it. the reason they don't cut it all the way is cause when a baby is born baby not used to breathing and there is still oxygen in the cord

because the cut of blood circulation from mommy to baby... an umbilical cord has two arterys and one vein, shares blood and nutrients from mommy he has to clamp it so the vein and artery clot off ... this is why its so important to keep it dry till it falls off that way baby dont get a infection in blood... :)

thats why you can save the "cordblood" in a blood bank just incase baby ever needs a blood transfusion
