Hi, I wonder if anyone can help me. First of all this is gonna be a long one so please bear with me.
Im a second time mum but my eldest is 21 so its been a long time since i did this. I also never had any issues with her feeding other than i couldnt bf for as long as id have liked so have nothing to compare my current situation with.
So my problem is the last 2 weeks or so my 5 month old lb has become really fussy with his bottles. He will take 2 maybe 3oz then refuse for 20 mins despite bringing up his wind really well. He will then take a further 2/3oz and refuse anymore. Before the last 2 weeks he would take 6/7oz in 5 mins flat but now its a real struggle to get anymore than 5/6oz in him without it taking 40+ mins. Hes not poorly or constipated, he brings up his wind really well. The only thing thats different is hes started teething but about a month ago now. Ive changed his teats for variflow and even bought new bottles. He will be 6 months on december 13th so short of starting to wean him im at a loss. Im concerned that he will start losing weight and/or become dehydrated. Does anybody have any ideas please? TIA xxx

@karenb1601, most baby's do have off periods so maybe he's just not as hungry? Try less and if he's draining the bottle then add another ounce at the next feed until he's back on track. xx

@canteloupe24, thanx hun. i just let him tell me when hes hungry. which atm is 3 & 1/2 to 4 hrs. it was 3. maybe i could try offering less more frequently? perhaps 6 oz instead of 7 or 8 for a few days? x

I've been having the same issues with my 3 month old. I put it down to teething. But I found that instead of giving him a bottle every 3 hours (which we had been doing) I started offering one every 3 and a half or 4 hours so he has a chance to get hungry first. Since doing that he's been drinking his whole 6oz so it's worth a try! xx

Babies don't really drink more than around the 30 oz mark at that age anyway. Does annoy me when they do that as how would u feed a massive baby. U couldn't physically get more down them. Reason I ask is we've been told babies etc should drink 100-180 ml per kg per day. My girl is on the 120ml/kg per day in here. But that only goes so far as an older child on solids would require a different amount. I seem to recall my daughter at your child's age dropped her milk to around what your has and the health visitor saying 25-30 ml per day. If u we're worried about dehydration an amount quite a lot under 100ml per kg would mean they weren't taking enough. The above formula is sufficient for sustaining life and gaining weight. My girl was drinking 800 ml a day at home but they have reduced that to 425 a day and she has gained over half a pound this week still

Does he eat food too? What he is having ATM is fine and if he has a bit less but eats that is fine too I'd say teething is complicating it but speak to your health visitor
