That’s a really long time for a child to have to manage if they truly have adhd/add especially because adhd/add presents as more than just hyperactivity. I would at the very least have my child see a psychologist for their input. Also, there are therapy services for adhd/add meds aren’t the only option.

My oldest has a lot of sensory issues, and I suspected autism. I made an appointment with our family doctor and got a referral to a pediatrician. He assessed him and was wonderful. My son was diagnosed with ADHD, some autistic features (stimming and loves playing alone) - but not enough to put him on the spectrum and also has sensory issues.
We have him on Biphenton right now and it has made a world of a difference with him. There are still some hard days, but overall it is like night and day with his personality and he seems much more open now and emotionally regulated.

@momgroupreject I agree with what you're saying. I don't want him on meds. I havent done enough research to know about other types of therapies to help with adhd. We've been through so much, OT, ST, ABA, for years. Ill have to do some research to see what other options are out there that don't involve medication at a young age.

The first step would just be talking with a psychiatrist! They will know what does and doesn’t work. Nobody can make anyone take meds, but I don’t think it’s fair to let kids struggle without any intervention. Meds and those procedures have also changed through out the years so it’s not always a straight line to Ritalin or adderall.

We suspect our son has adhd, he also has high functioning autism. His pediatrician says she won't diagnose kids with adhd until they enter like 6th grade or middle school because hyperactivity and focus can change by then and she doesn't want to diagnose put on meds prematurely. Not sure if that's most doctors but I do somewhat agree with he stance.

@dontblockmesis-imjustspeakingfacts, agree with a diagnosis even if meds aren’t given! There are behavior therapies and other ways to help. I think people are scared of a diagnosis bc when we were all in school, a diagnosis meant meds and that’s not the case anymore. Fortunately the science has progressed with adhd and most doctors don’t recommend meds as a first step but a diagnosis and tools to help will be beneficial vs trying to let them “outgrow” it

My son is turning 8 on Sunday and he has been going to speech therapy since October of 2017. Around September they decided to add Occuptional therapy for auditory processing and it’s been back and forth with his program. I made an appointment to get a referral for a developmental behavioral pediatrician to get a diagnosis. I think he may have adhd but honestly I spent years working around what works with him that I’m afraid to put him on medication even though I know it can help him so much in school, I just feel that any changes he won’t be my mason.

He seen his doctor who believed that's what it was and we were sent to a psychologist. He also had ODD and anxiety.
