To all moms of children with autism.
Do you have any advice or tips that help you with your child? My sons 20 months and was just diagnosed with moderate to severe autism and I’m totally lost and overwhelmed by all the forms of therapy he’ll need. Any advice is welcome❤️

He's so young. Just keep your head up. Patience is key. If you haven't introduced aba therapy I would suggest it.

Early intervention is so important. It can definitely seem overwhelming at first but once you start to see the changes and progress, it makes all the stress worth it. Eventually, at least for me, I came to terms emotionally with the diagnosis. I am so proud of how far we have come. We utilized the Regional Center (im in CA) and we also used our insurance for ABA. This is just the beginning of his and your journey and I wish you allllll the best.

My son is in ABA therapy and trust me when I say, it's the best thing ive ever done. He was in speech and occupational therapy prior with no real improvements. ABA they do it all and now he's working on potty boot camp with them. Its an amazing experience. Early intervention is really key to help them and us learn about autism as a family. ❤❤

My son is mild/moderate with a level 2 support. He was a later diagnosis as well because I was lacking support and just didn’t realize the resources I knew about were for kids too. I also lived in a more urban area where wait times were INSANE and we decided to move somewhere more suburban which had more services available for my kiddo.

Your son is very young so early intervention is going to be huge for him. It could be the difference between level 3 support and level 2 support. Make sure you have all your diagnosis paperwork. Start a binder and put all his stuff in there in chronological order to be able to keep track if need be. I even scan my materials and keep them in a folder and a separate USB flash drive as well. That way I can give out what’s needed to various providers and what not ASAP.

Not sure what state you’re in, but if you’re in CA, you need to contact your local regional center ASAP to get them out for an assessment of services. I get respite(in home child care for a break), underpads and wipes, and they helped me with a medi-cal(Medicaid) waiver because he was costing us almost $7k per year out of pocket and that HURT!! Once the kids go back to physical schools they’ll be paying for his childcare/social skills ABA time as well because I just started my own business and my husband will go back to work. If you’re in CA, it’s a great resource. It took me 5 months to get established but it was worth it.

When he turns 3(or right before at 2 years 9 months) you can go to your school district with the diagnosis and ask for a educational assessment. They have to find a preschool placement with supports for him whether it’s a head start program or through the district.

It’s a lot to wrap your head around, I know!!! I worked with people with developmental disabilities and was a nurse for YEARS and it’s still a lot for me. It takes a village and resources and a TON of patience. I’ve learned so much on this journey!

I’m here if you wanna chat.

My son was diagnosed at age 4. The great thing about an early diagnosis is that he will get so much help! I wish we would of known sooner for my son but I had no clue he was autistic untill I put him in pre k. He is going to be just fine and so are you ❤️
