A car seat is a must-have piece of gear when you become a parent until your child is about eight years of age and depending on your child’s height and weight, they may have to be in a seat beyond that age. It’s important to know about each type of car seat, when to use them, and when to expect a switch to the next level of seat.

What it is:

The infant car seat is the seat your child will come home in from the hospital and use for the better part of their first year of life.

This seat is meant to support an infant’s head and neck through those earlier months and beyond. Most seats take baby through 22-35lbs in weight. Infant seats are meant to be rear-facing at all times for optimum safety.

Brand(s) to consider:

Britax B-Safe-35 Infant Car Seat $209.99

Why we love it:

Britax puts their products through additional safety testing, so while we know they aren’t the least expensive of the bunch, we like how much attention they are paying to their safety standards.

Brand(s) to consider:

The Britax Advocate ClickTight topped the list on Best Reviews but another brand to look at is Chicco who also takes into account side impact in their safety testing. Both seats run around $300. Pretty steep pricing – but it will be the seat your child is in the longest.  However, you can also get a Graco for around $100, also in the top 5 for this year.
